Unveiling the Enchanting Pushpagiri: Karnataka’s Serene Escape

Towering at 5,626 feet (1,715 meters), Pushpagiri reigns supreme as the highest peak in the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Nestled amidst the majestic Western Ghats of Karnataka, it beckons adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

A Trekker’s Paradise:

Pushpagiri offers two distinct trekking routes:

  • Eastern Entrance (Beedehalli): This route is considered less strenuous, offering a gradual ascent via Heggademane temple.
  • Western Entrance (Kukke Subramanya): This route presents a more challenging climb, commencing at Giri Gadde (165 meters above sea level) and culminating at the peak.

Trekker’s Pointers:

  • Permits: Obtain mandatory trekking permits from the Forest Department near Batra Mane, a popular camping spot 6 km from Kukke Subramanya.
  • Season: The ideal trekking season is October to December, offering pleasant weather and clear visibility. Heavy monsoons (June to September) render trekking unsafe.

A Realm of Rich Biodiversity:

Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is a treasure trove of flora and fauna. Dense evergreen forests envelop the mountain, sheltering a diverse range of medicinal herbs, rare orchids, and captivating wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for langurs, barking deer, the elusive Malabar giant squirrel, and a symphony of birdlife.

Whispers of Mythology:

Pushpagiri is steeped in legend. The hilltop temple is believed to bear the footprint of Lord Subramanya, and two shrines grace the summit – one dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other to Lord Subramanya. Local folklore suggests a visit here can alleviate the ill effects of “Sharpadosha” (an astrological affliction).

The Source of Life:

Pushpagiri, along with its surrounding hills, forms the cradle of the River Kumaradhara. This principal tributary of the Netravathi River nourishes the coastal city of Mangaluru.

Embrace the Enchantment:

Pushpagiri offers a captivating blend of adventure, natural beauty, and rich mythology. Experience the thrill of the climb, immerse yourself in the verdant embrace of the sanctuary, and discover the serenity of this Western Ghats gem.
