Gandikota, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of India,” is a hidden gem located in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. Known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and adventurous activities, Gandikota offers a perfect blend of culture, nature, and thrill, making it an ideal destination for an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s exploring the ancient fort, marveling at the grand canyon-like gorge, or enjoying adrenaline-pumping activities, this destination promises an experience that resonates with both thrill-seekers and nature lovers. Combined with a visit to Belum Caves, this program provides a comprehensive and enriching adventure.
Gandikota’s history dates back to the 12th century when it was founded by Kapa Raja of the nearby Bommanapalle village. The Gandikota Fort, built with red sandstone, stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort has witnessed many historical events and battles, particularly during the reigns of the Kakatiya, Nayaka, and Qutb Shahi dynasties.
Situated on the banks of the Pennar River, Gandikota is surrounded by rugged hills and deep gorges. The striking landscape is defined by steep cliffs and the majestic gorge formed by the Pennar River cutting through the Erramala hills. The region has sparse vegetation, with dry deciduous forests and shrublands dominating the terrain. The surrounding landscape is arid with patches of green, providing a stark yet beautiful contrast.
