In a quiet corner of Karnataka, two childhood friends lived. They were nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats. These friends were Ramesh and Kiran. Both were sons of farmers, passionate about their land, and deeply rooted in their community.

After college, both decided to pursue tourism. They chose not the mass-market kind, but the kind that brings people closer to nature. It emphasizes simplicity and soul.

They each opened a homestay in their village, about 10 km apart. Their homes were similar. They had tiled roofs and offered traditional food. A forest was nearby, and waterfalls were not far off. Their big-hearted hospitality was something their guests never forgot.

But over the years, their paths began to diverge.

🪣 Ramesh – The Bucket Carrier

Ramesh, the ever-smiling host, lived day to day.

He waited eagerly for weekend guests.
He listed his homestay on every booking site.
He gave discounts, freebies, and extra meals.
He answered every call himself.
He woke up at 5 a.m. to clean rooms and chopped wood late at night for the bonfire.

But he never had time to think beyond today.
He was always busy. Always tired. Always chasing.

When a bad season came—fewer bookings, rain, or a pandemic—his earnings dried up. He often borrowed from friends or sold part of his land just to survive.

🚰 Kiran – The Pipeline Builder

Kiran also worked hard—but with a different mindset.

He served his first few guests like family but always asked for feedback, photos, and reviews.

He began an Instagram page. He shared not just his homestay but also stories of local life. These included picking coffee beans, making jaggery, and village festivals.

He collaborated with companies like Nature Admire and a local trekking club to organise monthly nature walks.

He wrote blogs in Kannada and English about hidden trails nearby.

He offered guests a return discount if they brought friends.

He also trained a local boy to help, so he can step back and think long-term.

In the first two years, he earned less than Ramesh.

By the fourth year, he was booked three months in advance.
His homestay ran on systems, not stress.
He started a second property.
He slept well.

🔁 What’s the Difference?

Like the old parable of two men fetching water in buckets. Meanwhile, one quietly builds a pipeline. Ramesh and Kiran are symbols of two mindsets in tourism.

  • One works hard every day
  • The other works smart, builds slow, and earns every day—even in his sleep

In tourism, our pipeline is made of:

✅ Repeat customers
✅ A trusted online presence
✅ Collaborations (with operators, consultants)
✅ Strong reviews and real stories
✅ Off-season offerings
✅ Local partnerships

Kiran wasn’t more educated.
He just saw the big picture.

💡 And You?

Whether you run a:

  • Homestay in Agumbe
  • Campsite near Dandeli
  • Resort in Sakleshpur
  • Coffee estate stays in Chikmagalur

…remember: you are the architect of your pipeline.

You can keep running behind weekend bookings—or slowly, quietly, build a brand, a system, a legacy.

You don’t need to become big. You need to become consistent, visible, and valuable.

🙏 A Note from Dev Balaji

I’ve met hundreds of Rameshs and Kirans through Nature Admire over the past two decades.

I’ve seen bucket carriers burn out and give up.

I’ve seen quiet dreamers build thriving ecosystems — even from remote villages — through grit, love for nature, and a growth mindset.

The story of Kiran is not fiction.
It is you, if you choose.

You don’t need a big investment.
You need a small, steady plan.

Let’s stop carrying buckets.
Let’s build pipelines—together.

With deep respect for every tourism entrepreneur,
– Dev Balaji
