Embark on a captivating journey into the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas, where serenity and adventure intertwine. The Sahastra Tal trek, a hidden gem, promises breathtaking landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and a chance to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The “Lake District of Garhwal”:
As renowned travel writer Bill Aitken aptly described, this area is a haven for alpine lakes, including the majestic Sahastra Tal (also known as Shastru Tal or Sahasra Tal). Nestled at an altitude exceeding 15,000 ft (4600 m), this medium-sized lake holds a captivating legend. According to local lore, a king performed a ritual on its shores, offering a thousand (Sahastra) Brahma Kamal flowers to Lord Vishnu.
A Landscape Painted in Nature’s Palette:
The wilderness and vastness of the Himalayas will captivate you throughout the trek. Lush green meadows and ridges dominate the summer landscape, offering a feast for the eyes. In autumn, these vibrant hues transform into a tapestry of yellows and browns. Kush Kalyan and Kyarki, two expansive alpine meadows (locally called Bugyals), are a highlight, providing breathtaking vistas.
A Scenic Ridge Walk and Unique Encounters:
From Kush Kalyan, a scenic ridge walk unfolds, offering panoramic views on both sides. Several smaller lakes dot the landscape as you progress towards Kyarki. This rarely visited trail serves as a vital grazing ground for shepherds. You might also encounter the semi-nomadic Van Gujjars in the Kush Kalyan area.

The trek to reach the lake is a high-altitude expedition that offers stunning Himalayan vistas, diverse flora and fauna, and a rich historical and cultural backdrop.
The region surrounding Sahastrakund Lake has a long and fascinating history. The lake itself holds religious significance for Hindus, who believe it to be one of the five sacred lakes mentioned in the Mahabharata. Legends say that the Pandavas, during their exile, visited this lake.
