Tour Details

The Milam Glacier has a rich history. It was historically a trading hub between Tibet and India. Tibetan merchants used to visit this place, trading in precious gems, stones, Pashmina, salt, and other goods with the locals. The natives of Milam also traveled to Tibet for business, carrying rice, cotton clothes, jaggery, and sugar to sell in Tibetan markets.

History and Mythology:

  • Ancient Trade Route: The Milam Glacier region was once a vital trade route between India and Tibet. Evidence suggests movement of people and goods for centuries, with traces of ancient trails still visible.
  • Local Legends: Legends abound in the Kumaon region. One popular tale speaks of a celestial maiden named Milam who sacrificed herself to save the valley from a monstrous serpent. The Milam Glacier is believed to be her petrified form.

Topography and Flora & Fauna:

  • Glacial Formation: The Milam Glacier, nestled in the Kumaon Himalayas, is the largest glacier in the region. It’s a valley glacier, formed over millennia by the accumulation and movement of snow and ice.
  • Diverse Landscape: The trek route traverses valleys, meadows, and forests, showcasing a variety of ecosystems. Keep an eye out for alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers like rhododendrons, primulas, and gentians.
  • Wildlife: The region is home to a variety of animal life, including elusive Himalayan Musk Deer, Himalayan Thar (mountain goat), Snow Leopards (at higher altitudes), and birds like Himalayan Griffons and lammergeyers.
