A humble reflection from the trail

Trekking in the mountains welcome everyone—but how we walk into them shapes what we receive in return. Over the years, trekking has evolved into different styles, each carrying its own rhythm, responsibility, and relationship with nature. None is “right” or “wrong”—but each creates a very different experience.

Here’s a simple, human look at four commonly seen trekking styles.

https://backpackerspantry.com/cdn/shop/articles/minimalist-hiker_1.jpg?v=1591308748

1) Alpine Style Trekking – Minimal, Mindful, Mountain-First

Alpine style is the purest conversation between a human and a mountain. You carry only what you truly need. No advance camps, no comfort buffers—just skill, fitness, and respect for terrain and weather.

What it feels like

  • Light packs, fast movement
  • Deep self-reliance and decision-making
  • Raw exposure to altitude, wind, and silence

Who it’s for
Experienced trekkers and mountaineers who value efficiency, ethics, and minimal impact over comfort.

The gift
Humility. The mountain leads; you listen.

2) Backpacking – Simple, Slow, Soulful

Backpacking is where many people first learn to live lightly. You carry your shelter, food, and essentials on your back and move at a pace that allows observation—birds, flowers, clouds, and your own breath.

What it feels like

  • Moderate effort with personal freedom
  • Camps chosen thoughtfully
  • Evenings under stars with simple meals

Who it’s for
Nature lovers, solo trekkers, small groups—those who seek connection over convenience.

The gift
Intimacy with the land. You begin to notice small things.

3) Sahib Style Trekking – Personalized Comfort in the Wild

“Sahib style” trekking is about personalized service without compromising the journey. It is not about ego—it’s about ease, safety, and focused experience.

https://media.glampinghub.com/CACHE/images/accommodations/chamba-camp-thiksey-ladakh-safari-tents-1484914499547/367c247e0ac41235f54383bb2ca21f69.jpg

Here, a dedicated support team works quietly behind the scenes:

  • Porters carry personal gear
  • Cooks prepare fresh meals
  • Guides lead with care and knowledge
  • An advance party sets up camps before you arrive

Imagine reaching a high-altitude campsite to find:

  • A ready tent with sleeping bag and mat
  • Hot water to freshen up
  • A toilet tent pitched for privacy
  • A dining tent with table and chair—even at altitude

For just 3 to 5 trekkers, there may be a platoon-like support team, ensuring safety, hygiene, and comfort.

Who it’s for
Families, seniors, first-timers, wellness groups, researchers, or those who want to experience mountains without physical overload.

The gift
Presence. When logistics are taken care of, the mind opens to beauty.

4) Herd Style Trekking – Numbers Over Nature

Herd trekking involves large groups—often 10 to 100 people— moving between fixed campsites on a fixed schedule.

What it looks like

  • Packed or buffet-style food
  • Common toilets
  • Low guide-to-trekker ratio
  • Rigid timelines

What’s often lost

  • Silence of the wilderness
  • Flora and fauna observation
  • Personal attention and safety
  • Emotional engagement with the journey

Large groups—even when split into smaller batches—can unintentionally create:

  • Conflicts and disengagement
  • Environmental stress
  • A feeling of “tourism” rather than trekking

A gentle truth
Mountains open up best to small groups. Ideally, not more than 8–10 trekkers with two qualified instructors.

A Closing Thought

Trekking is not just about reaching a destination—it’s about how lightly and respectfully we pass through a living landscape.

  • Alpine style teaches humility
  • Backpacking teaches simplicity
  • Sahib style teaches care and inclusivity
  • Herd style reminds us what happens when numbers outweigh mindfulness

If there is one quiet lesson the mountains keep repeating, it is this:
Smaller groups, deeper presence, and thoughtful choices create richer journeys—for us and for the land.

Walk gently. The mountains are always watching—and always welcoming.

7. How do you manage children with special needs or dietary restrictions?

      • Please inform us in detail about any special needs, allergies, or specific dietary requirements at the time of registration. We strive to accommodate all children. However, we will assess each request individually. This ensures we can provide a safe and comfortable environment.

🌿 Why Adventure Camps Are Essential for Your Child’s Growth: A Note to Parents

Dear Parents,

In today’s fast-paced, screen-dominated world, children face a variety of physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges — from learning difficulties like dyslexia to behavioral concerns like ADHD, to emotional fears of heights, water, darkness, and social anxiety. As caretakers of their future, we often search for holistic, safe, and meaningful solutions.

One powerful and proven way to support children in overcoming these hurdles is through Adventure Camps — specially designed programs that blend fun, learning, exposure, and confidence-building in a natural environment.

✅ What Challenges Do Children Face Today?

Below are some of the common difficulties many children silently struggle with:

  • 🔵 Cognitive & Learning Challenges:
    ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia
  • Speech delays, Slow learning
  • Low attention span or lack of focus
  • 🔵 Emotional & Behavioral Challenges:
    Anxiety, Depression, Mood Swings
  • Bipolar disorder, OCD
  • Shyness, Social withdrawal
  • Tantrums, Anger, Disobedience
  • Fear of failure or rejection
  • 🔵 Fear-Based Challenges:
    Fear of Heights (Acrophobia)
  • Fear of Water (Aquaphobia)
  • Fear of the Dark or Isolation
  • Fear of trying new things or being judged
  • 🔵 Physical & Nutritional Issues:
    Malnutrition or Obesity
  • Low stamina, lack of fitness
  • Poor posture or coordination

🌟 How Adventure Camps Help Overcome These Issues

  1. 🧠 Boosts Confidence & Self-Esteem
Children achieve small milestones like crossing a rope bridge or climbing a wall — these success moments stay with them forever.
  2. 🧘 Reduces Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Blocks
Time spent in nature, away from screens, with supportive trainers, helps children calm their nervous system and process emotions better.
  3. 🏃 Improves Focus, Discipline & Physical Health
Adventure camps often include team games, hiking, yoga, obstacle courses, which improve stamina, attention span, and sleep cycles.
  4. 👥 Encourages Social Skills & Teamwork
Through group activities, children learn to communicate, share, and lead, even if they are shy or introverted at school.
  5. 🧗 Overcomes Fears Gradually & Safely
Fear of water? Start with shallow stream walks.
Fear of heights? Begin with a low rope course.
Every step is guided, safe, and non-judgmental.
  6. 🗣 Enhances Communication Skills
Children take part in storytelling, expression activities, and team strategy — improving both verbal and non-verbal communication.
  7. 🍎 Builds Awareness of Health & Nutrition
Camps promote balanced diets, hydration, and mindful eating, helping children understand the importance of a healthy body.
  8. 🎯 Encourages Risk-Taking in a Safe Environment
Children learn to take calculated risks, trust their instincts, and develop problem-solving abilities outside textbooks.

💡 Real Growth Happens Outside Comfort Zones
As parents, we can guide our children, but it is experiential learning — like what happens at a good adventure camp — that truly shapes character. These camps don’t just entertain — they educate, empower, and elevate.

Your child may return home muddy and tired… but also more:

  • Confident
  • Balanced
  • Courageous
  • Empathetic

And ready to take on life.

AC is used for road travel but may be switched off in hilly or forest areas for technical reasons. Our drivers are child-friendly, and we have backup vehicles for any unforeseen emergencies.
  • Activities: All activities are led by well-trained, qualified, and friendly instructors. We use UIAA-approved safety gear and follow a strict safety protocol. We maintain a ratio of at least one instructor for every five students (5:1) for key activities, with additional support staff (1 for every 10 kids) to ensure optimal safety. Activities are designed to be age-appropriate and consider each child’s physical capacity.
  • Campsites: Campsites are carefully selected for safety, cleanliness, and basic comfort. They are managed by friendly hosts who ensure the campus remains tidy and secure.
  • Instructors: The team includes a dedicated Camp Manager, a lady instructor for female participants, and an adequate number of additional instructors to maintain a safe instructor-to-student ratio.

2. Food & Meals:

  • During the camp, we provide fresh, hygienically prepared, and nutritious vegetarian meals three times a day. Evening snacks are also provided, along with a warm beverage like Boost, Horlicks, or Badam milk. We cater to vegetarian dietary requirements only.

3. Group Size:

  • We prefer a maximum group size of 45 children per batch to ensure individual attention and safety. The minimum group size to run a camp is 10 participants.

4. What should my child pack?

  • A detailed packing list will be provided upon registration. This will include essentials like comfortable clothing for trekking and activities. You should also bring a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Don’t forget a water bottle, a small backpack, and personal toiletries. We recommend packing light but smart.

5. How are medical emergencies handled?

  • All our camp instructors are trained in basic first aid. We carry a comprehensive first-aid kit at all times. In case of a minor ailment, our team will provide necessary care. If there are serious medical emergencies, we will transport the child to the nearest medical facility. We will inform parents immediately.

6. Can I contact my child during the camp?

  • We believe in giving children a chance to disconnect and fully immerse themselves in the experience. Phone calls are generally not allowed during the day to ensure their focus on activities. However, a specific time slot will be designated each evening for children to call home. In case of an emergency, parents can contact the Camp Manager.

7. How do you manage children with special needs or dietary restrictions?

  • Please inform us in detail about any special needs, allergies, or specific dietary requirements at the time of registration. We strive to accommodate all children. However, we will assess each request individually. This ensures we can provide a safe and comfortable environment.

8. What is your cancellation and refund policy?

  • Details about our cancellation policy will be outlined in the registration form. A full or partial refund may be provided based on the notice period before the camp starts. Administrative fees will be deducted. We recommend reviewing this policy before making a booking.

9. Will my child be given a certificate?

  • Yes, every child who completes the camp will receive a Certificate of Participation. This certificate recognizes their achievements. It also acknowledges the skills they have acquired.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of your children is our top priority. Our camp’s safety protocols are designed to be comprehensive. They cover all aspects of the camp experience from transportation and activities to food and medical emergencies. Here’s a detailed overview of the measures we have in place:
  • 10. General Camp Safety
  • Experienced and Vetted Staff: All our instructors and staff are carefully selected based on their qualifications, experience, and temperament. They undergo background checks and are trained in first aid and CPR.
  • Child-to-Staff Ratio: We uphold a strict and adequate ratio of instructors and support staff to children. For adventure activities, the ratio is one instructor for every five students (5:1). Additionally, we have one support staff member for every ten children for overall supervision.
  • Emergency Preparedness: We have a well-defined emergency response plan for various scenarios. These scenarios include medical emergencies, natural events, or a child getting separated from the group. This plan includes designated contact persons, a protocol for communicating with parents, and arrangements with local medical facilities.
  • Continuous Supervision: Children are never left unsupervised. A buddy system is encouraged during all activities. A head count is conducted regularly. This is done especially before and after each activity and during transportation.
  • Transportation Safety
  • Vetted Vehicles and Drivers: We hire chartered, air-conditioned coaches from reputable travel companies. The coaches are well-maintained, and the drivers are experienced and familiar with the routes.
  • Safety Features: Coaches are equipped with first-aid kits and emergency contact information. AC is used during road travel. It is switched off in hilly or forest areas for technical reasons. This ensures the vehicle’s optimal performance and safety.
  • On-Road Protocols: Our staff ensures that children remain seated and follow all on-board safety instructions.
  • Adventure Activities Safety
  • Certified Equipment: All adventure sports equipment is UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme) approved. This includes harnesses, ropes, helmets, and other safety gear. The equipment is regularly inspected for wear and tear.
  • Age and Skill-Appropriate Activities: Activities are tailored to the age and physical capacity of the children. Instructors assess each child’s skill level before allowing them to participate and provide one-on-one monitoring for certain challenging activities.
  • Pre-Activity Briefing: Before every activity, a detailed safety briefing is conducted. Children learn how to use the equipment correctly. They are given clear instructions on what to do. They are also instructed on what not to do.
  • Trekking and Hiking: During treks, an experienced guide leads the group. A support staff member follows at the rear. This arrangement ensures no child is left behind.
  • Medical and Health Safety
  • First-Aid and Medical Care: All camps are equipped with a comprehensive first-aid kit. In case of any minor injuries or ailments, our trained staff will provide immediate care.
  • Medical Information: Parents are required to provide detailed information about their child’s health, including any allergies, pre-existing conditions, or medications. This information is kept confidential but is readily accessible to our medical support staff in an emergency.
  • Dietary Safety: We provide fresh, hygienic, and nutritious vegetarian meals prepared on-site or by a trusted vendor. We can accommodate common dietary restrictions if informed in advance. We also ensure children are well-hydrated throughout the day, especially during outdoor activities.
  • Campsite Security and Hygiene
  • Secure Campsites: Our campsites are carefully chosen for their safety, security, and cleanliness. The area is well-lit at night, and we have a dedicated host who ensures the premises are safe and tidy.
  • Hygiene Practices: We promote and enforce proper hygiene habits, including regular hand washing, to prevent the spread of germs. The camp premises, including sleeping quarters and washrooms, are kept clean and sanitized.

I’m reminded of that old Coca-Cola ad where Aamir Khan plays a Gurkha, guiding people to reach a hut. Every time they ask, “Kitna door hai?” he smiles and says, “Bas paanch minute, memsaab.”

In many ways, our profession as instructors is similar—but also very different. Unlike guides who simply show the way, instructors walk a tougher path. We don’t just lead; we carry responsibility.

When clients travel with us, they have different strengths and struggles. Some are fit, while others are not. Some are mentally strong, and some are doubtful. There are seasoned trekkers, and there are absolute newbies. Our role is to synchronise all these differences into one team. We balance the strong with the weak. We motivate the tired. We slow down the fast. Our instructors make sure the group moves as one. That’s the magic of teamwork.

Our instructors play a mind game. They push and motivate clients. Sometimes, they distract clients just enough to keep them going despite leeches, rain, and poor visibility. Wet clothes, cold winds, or closed trails in the wilderness add to the challenge. And when someone asks, “How far?” we often smile and say, “Just a few more minutes.”

Yes, sometimes our clients get frustrated. But the moment they reach the summit, the sense of achievement wipes away every bit of struggle. They forget the tactics we used to keep them moving. They only remember the joy of reaching the top.

That’s why we always remind them—in the mountains, it’s just one step at a time.

The real advantage of having a trained, qualified, and experienced instructor is not only motivation and confidence-building but also safety. We act as guardians—ready to handle wilderness challenges, medical emergencies, or any unexpected disaster.

So next time, don’t confuse an operator or a guide with an instructor. A guide shows you the way.
But an instructor? We walk the way with you—and make sure you reach your goal, safely and stronger than before

The advantages of Elephants in Wildlife.

1. Seed Dispersal

Elephants consume a variety of fruits and disperse seeds over large areas through their dung. This promotes forest regeneration and biodiversity, ensuring new plants continue to grow in healthy numbers.

2. Forest Clearing

Elephants knock down trees and trample vegetation. They create clearings that allow sunlight to reach the forest floor. This process encourages the growth of diverse plant species.

3. Nutrient Recycling

Elephant dung enriches the soil with nutrients, benefiting plant growth and supporting a wide range of organisms.

4. Firebreaks

Their large trails and clearings act as natural firebreaks. They slow the spread of wildfires and protect vast areas of the forest.

5. Supporting Pollinators

Elephants keep open areas and diverse plant species. This helps pollinators, like bees and butterflies, thrive. Their thriving is crucial for plant reproduction.

6. Enhancing Water Distribution

Elephant movements shape the flow of water in the landscape, helping forests retain better hydration during rains.

7. Water Source Creation

In dry seasons, elephants dig in riverbeds to create waterholes, providing life-saving water for many species.

8. Habitat Creation

Their movements and feeding habits create micro-habitats that benefit insects, birds, and small mammals.

9. Tree Population Control

By feeding on certain tree species, elephants prevent any single species from dominating, maintaining a balanced and diverse forest structure.

Nature as a Teacher

Nature never hands out certificates, yet it shapes us in ways no formal training ever could.
Finding your way through a misty forest teaches resilience. Pitching a tent in freezing winds requires leadership. Crossing a wild river and making a fire with what little you have builds teamwork.

In our outdoor programs, learning often begins where comfort ends. Outbound training humbles even the most confident individuals. It pushes people to trust one another. They are encouraged to adapt and rediscover their inner strength.

The Himalayan Connection

Our expeditions in the Himalayas have been among the most soul-enriching experiences we have ever known. Up there, the mountains teach patience and humility. But the deepest lessons often come from the communities that have lived in these high places for centuries. These are people whose lives are woven seamlessly into the rhythm of the land.

tibetians tribals sherpa nature admire indigenous

Guardians of the Mountains

The Monpas of Arunachal Pradesh have an ancient library of knowledge. The Bhotias of Uttarakhand also have such a library. The Sherpas of Nepal maintain their own ancient knowledge. They have insights about survival, weather, and medicinal plants. These communities understand the delicate balance between taking from nature and giving back to it.

We have seen how they:

  • Harvest wild mushrooms like morels and oyster varieties. Forage them sustainably to feed families and earn a living. Ensure this is done without depleting the land.
  • Prepare herbal medicines from kutki, jimbu, rhodiola, and countless other plants passed down through oral tradition.
  • Practice sustainable agriculture through terraced farming, yak herding, and crop rotation that preserve soil and biodiversity.
  • Craft handmade goods — wool, textiles, bamboo, and cane work. These items are both useful and a reflection of cultural pride.

These communities are not merely our hosts in the mountains. They are our teachers. They show what it truly means to live in harmony with the earth.

Guardians of the Forests

Far from the Himalayas, other indigenous communities work tirelessly to protect their homelands. They live deep in the lush forests of the BR Hills, Nilgiris, Dandeli, and the Western Ghats.
They grow native trees. They collect forest products like soapnut seeds, kokum, big cardamom, star anise, and cinnamon. They also gather nuts, wild fruits, gums, natural dyes, waxes, honey, lac, tussar silk, bamboo, and cane. These resources are always harvested with care so the forest can give again next season.

Their efforts protect birdlife, wildlife corridors, and countless species of flora. They are climate warriors without the title. They practise agroforestry and grow medicinal herbs. They cultivate brown rice and safeguard seeds for the regeneration of forests.

We have had the privilege to learn from and work alongside many tribes. These include the Soligas of BR Hills, Todas, Kotas, Kurumbas, Irulas, and Badagas of the Nilgiris. Other tribes are the Siddi, Gowli, Medar, Lambani of Dandeli, and the Jenu Kuruba. Additionally, we have worked with the Kadu Kuruba, Koraga, Kattunayakan, Yerava, and Kudiya communities. Each carries a unique legacy of knowledge, resilience, and respect for the land.

Nature Admire’s Early Journey

When Nature Admire began shaping the adventure industry in the early 2000s, we realized something important. Our work could never just be about thrills and trails. It had to be about respect — for the land and for the people who know it best.

We adopted Leave No Trace ethics long before it became popular. We kept group sizes small and created a “one family” camp atmosphere. We also ensured zero waste in the outdoors. Our footprints were light, but our connections ran deep.

The local communities welcomed us with simple, hygienic, home-cooked food and stories told by the warmth of the fire. They guided us through forests, taught us to read nature’s signs, and shared their traditions. In turn, our presence created livelihoods, supported handicrafts, and promoted sustainable travel that left the environment richer, not poorer.

A Living Bridge Between Worlds

Every expedition became a bridge. It connected the modern traveller with timeless indigenous wisdom. It formed a link between adventure and responsibility. It also united exploration with conservation. We learned to see the land through their eyes, to respect the harvest cycles, to value patience over speed.

And our participants returned home not only with photographs. They appreciated the environment more deeply. They developed a stronger sense of teamwork. They gained a richer understanding of cultural diversity.

The Truth We Carry Forward

Protecting indigenous communities means protecting the forests. Their survival is not just a matter of heritage — it is the most practical, time-tested conservation strategy we have. Without their knowledge and stewardship, our efforts against climate change and biodiversity loss will always be incomplete.

At Nature Admire, we believe adventure and conservation can walk hand in hand. Travellers step into a forest and leave only footprints. They eat food grown by the people of that land. They buy crafts directly from the hands that made them. They are not just visiting. They are participating in protection.

Why Travel with Nature Admire – Beyond Just an Adventure

Traveling with Nature Admire is not just about reaching a destination. It’s about stepping into an experience that shapes the way you see the world. This experience enriches your skills and connects you with a vibrant tribe of like-minded explorers.

When you join a Nature Admire journey, you step into a community where learning flows both ways. Seasoned experts share trekking techniques, safety practices, and deep insights into nature. Fellow travelers’ stories open your mind to fresh perspectives.

The Challenge of Traveling on Your Own

Nature Admire travel

Post-pandemic, more people are realizing that travel is not just a leisure activity. It’s wellness, family unity, and an antidote to the monotony of work life. Social media, influencers, and online platforms have made planning easier than ever. Nevertheless, ease of booking doesn’t always mean depth of experience. It also doesn’t guarantee safety.

While travelling solo or with friends and family sounds appealing, the reality can be more complicated:

  • Safety risks in remote terrain or during adverse weather conditions.
  • No disaster preparedness when nature changes unexpectedly.
  • Logistical hassles with accommodation, transport, or communication.
  • Physical limitations were not accounted for in the plan.
  • Stress from managing bookings and troubleshooting instead of relaxing.

The Hidden Medical & Physical Challenges

Self-planned trips often overlook the very real needs of group members. Health and fitness levels vary, and some face:

  • Gastroenteritis or sensitive digestion
  • Obesity or reduced stamina
  • Asthma or breathing difficulties
  • Sinus issues in cold or wet climates
  • Knee pain or difficulty on downhill trails
  • Vertigo or fear of heights
  • Limited running speed or endurance
  • Slower walking pace or frequent lagging
  • Phobias of water, enclosed spaces, or certain activities

Without trained guidance, these challenges can compromise safety and enjoyment. In unorganised groups, overly adventurous members push dangerous limits. Slower ones risk being left behind. This balance is hard to manage without professional oversight.

Why Nature Admire Makes the Difference

With 28 years of experience, Nature Admire knows how to guarantee every journey is safe and inclusive. They make it memorable even for groups with mixed abilities and personalities.

Our instructors are not only highly trained but also deeply passionate. They:

  • Keep discipline with adventurous members while ensuring fun for everyone
  • Make sure no one feels left out — amateur, cautious, or thrill-seeker alike

It’s this balance of care and adventure that makes our programmes successful every time. Achieving this is rare in self-planned or friends-only trips.

Travel That Teaches, Connects & Sustains

With Nature Admire, every trip is layered with experiences you won’t find in a standard itinerary:

  • Flora & Fauna Insights – Learn to recognize rare plants, spot wildlife, and understand fragile ecosystems.

  • Eco-Friendly Travel – Reduce carbon footprint, travel green, and support local communities.
  • Hidden Gems – Explore offbeat trails and secret spots only locals know.
  • Team Bonding – Smaller, like-minded groups foster intimacy, camaraderie, and lasting friendships.

Travelling with Nature Admire also means you learn from each other. You gain insights from fellow trekkers’ skills, stories, and tips. Together, you share the joy of ticking off bucket-list adventures. Over time, you build a tribe of passionate travellers. They share your love for exploration. They continue inspiring you long after the trip ends.

The Heart of the Journey

Independent travel offers freedom. However, it rarely offers the safety net that comes from travelling with experts. It also lacks adaptability and depth. Nature Admire combines safety, sustainability, exclusivity, and enrichment to craft journeys where every participant feels supported and valued.

Our trips are not just about seeing places — they’re about living the moments, sharing the stories, and growing together. Friendships are formed around a campfire, on a mountain ridge, or deep in a forest. Fears are overcome in these settings. A stronger, more confident you emerges.

Nature Admire is more than an adventure organiser — it’s a movement for explorers. We design journeys that inspire, challenge, and connect people for life.

Pack your curiosity. Bring your spirit of adventure. Find your place in a tribe that believes travel should be both a discovery and a lifelong connection.

The Golden Era of Outbound Training (2000–2009): A Journey Worth Remembering

By Dev Balaji

In a time not too far gone, outbound training wasn’t just a checkbox in a company’s annual calendar. It was a powerful tool for transformation. Between 2000 and 2009, outbound camps were designed not as weekend getaways. They were immersive experiences that pushed boundaries. These experiences built character and sparked personal and professional growth.

Those memories highlight the changes that have occurred over time. Today, outbound training is often reduced to superficial fun and games within resort premises. This blog is a walk down memory lane—into the wild, raw, and truly meaningful days of outbound learning.

communication leadership team building judgement outbound training camp for corporate nature admire bengaluru

🌲 When Learning Happened in the Wild

Back then, there were fewer resorts and far more wilderness. HR leaders, team managers, and even top executives were driven by a passion. It was not just for team bonding. Their aim was deep-rooted personal development and nature-inspired learning.

The aim was never about comfort. It was about challenge, growth, and team synergy. Concepts like:

  • Leadership under pressure
  • Decision-making in uncertain conditions
  • Adaptability in unfamiliar environments
  • Empathy, emotional intelligence, and mutual trust
  • Creative thinking and resilience

…weren’t taught in conference rooms. They were learned in the wild, by climbing hills, building rafts, lighting campfires, and sharing stories under open skies.

🧗‍♂️ Real Adventures, Real Lessons

I still vividly remember the outbound sessions at Savanadurga.Teams would scale the hill early morning, only to head out post-lunch for cave explorations and rappelling. And the day wouldn’t end there. Participants would take on rope activities. They would end the evening with camping and a bonfire. It would be deep in the forest, with barely a couple of restrooms in sight.

At Makalidurga, the thrill was in climbing up. Then came rappelling down, followed by raft building and boating. You trusted the raft you built with your team to carry you ahead. It was more than an exercise—it was a lesson in trust and collaboration.

And who forgets Kemmanagundi? With its damp mist, colonial-style buildings, and raw terrain, participants trekked 20 km through leech-infested forests. Then they continued with another 10 km hike, rope courses, and team challenges. These activities pushed both physical limits and mental resilience.

🌿 Wayanad, Jungle Camps, and Beyond

Wayanad was another jewel in the crown. We trekked Chembra Peak. We explored Edakkal caves. We visited Kuruvadweep island. We also enjoyed team games near Pookot Lake. Every moment was a beautiful blend of learning and nature.

The journeys also took us to legendary campsites:

  • Pegasus, Doddamakali, Bhimeshwari, and Galibore (Jungle Lodges)
  • Wonder Valley by Ozone (Bannerghatta)
  • Kings Sanctuary (Nagarahole)
  • Retreats in Bandipur and Masinagudi

These weren’t resorts. They were living classrooms, with rivers as whiteboards, forests as facilitators, and silence as a mentor.

🏔 Outbound in the Himalayas and Beyond Borders

Some companies with bigger visions and bigger budgets embarked on outbound trips to the Himalayas. They hosted camps in Rishikesh, Deoriyatal, Dhanaulti, Jim Corbett, and Nainital. There, amid pine forests and snow-capped peaks, participants rafted down the Ganges, trekked through clouds, and discovered their inner strengths.

Internationally, Singapore’s Pulau Bin Islands offered exclusive, high-impact “Think on Your Feet” programs that tested agility and presence of mind. These were premium, content-rich modules with a deep focus on skill development and strategy.

Malaysia, even today, treats outbound training almost like a sacred art. It is integrated not just in corporates. It is also part of colleges and professional degree programs. In the US and Europe, outbound is a mainstream part of leadership development, deeply woven into academic and professional cultures.

⚠ The Shift: From Purpose to Party

Today, the narrative has changed. Outbound is often seen as just a fun break—resort games, pool volleyball, or karaoke nights. Serious content is sidelined, and budgets often prioritize entertainment over real growth.

While there’s nothing wrong with fun, it shouldn’t come at the cost of purpose. The heart of outbound training lies in discomfort, unpredictability, teamwork, and growth—not in comfort zones.

💬 A Final Reflection

Outbound training was never just about the outdoors.
It was about stepping outside yourself,
facing the elements, and learning who you are—
alongside your team.

For those of us who lived those years, the memories are not just nostalgic—they are foundational. We carry them not as photos in albums, but as chapters of personal transformation.

It’s time we bring that spirit back—maybe not in the same form—but with the same soul. Because true learning never really happens within four walls. True learning happens halfway up a hill. It occurs when you’re out of breath and leaning on your teammate’s shoulder. That’s when you realise… you’re stronger together.

📌 Would You Like to Bring Back the Real Outbound?

If you’re an HR leader, team manager, educator, or learning professional, here is an invitation. It is a call to revisit the true purpose of outbound training. Let’s create programs that inspire, not just entertain.
